How random chat matching actually works

Where you wait

When you press Start, Stranger Chat puts you into a waiting queue. There are two queues — one for text and one for video — so text-only users never end up in the same pool as people who turned their camera on.

The matcher walks the queue and pairs the first person it can. Because matching is done against the people currently waiting, it is effectively instant: with anyone in the pool, a match usually resolves in a second or two.

Interests must overlap

Interests are the strongest matching signal. If both people set interests, the matcher requires at least one shared tag. Set “movies, comedy” and you will only be offered people who listed at least one of those too. You can set up to five comma-separated tags before you start.

If your interests are very specific, waiting for a perfect match would be unfair. After about ten seconds the matcher relaxes the requirement, so people with niche interests still get connected instead of waiting forever. The trade-off is real: a common tag like “music” matches fast, an unusual one matches slower but with fewer dead-end chats.

Language and country filters

You can also pick a language and a country. Two people with explicit, different languages are not matched while both are fresh in the queue; same for countries. “Any” matches anyone. Like interests, these filters relax after a short wait so that a rare language or region doesn't strand you in the queue.

This is the mechanism behind “match with people in Japan” or “practice French only” — set the filter on the start screen and the queue does the rest.

Who you never see again

Two rules protect your matches. First, anyone you block is excluded in both directions — they can never be matched with you again, and you can never be matched with them. Second, after you press Next or a call ends, a short cooldown makes an instant re-match with the same person unlikely, so “skipping” actually moves you forward.
