What interests actually do

Interests are the strongest signal in the matcher. When both people set interests, matching requires at least one shared tag — so listing “gaming” means you only get offered to people who listed gaming too. It is topic matching, not a personality test.

How to set them

The start screen accepts up to five comma-separated tags, and suggests common ones as you type. A good mix looks like one or two broad tags plus one or two specific ones: “music, rock, guitar” or “gaming, rpg, anime”. Broad tags keep your queue fast; specific tags make the conversations better.

What happens with niche interests

The matcher prefers shared tags, but it won't let a niche interest strand you. After about ten seconds of waiting, the requirement relaxes and you can be matched with someone outside your tags — better than staring at a spinner. So don't fear an unusual tag: it may slow matching slightly, but it raises the odds that a match actually clicks.
