Japanese chat
Chat with Japanese speakers from Japan and the diaspora. Pick Japanese in the language filter and the matcher will pair you with people who speak it.
What is Japanese chat?
Japanese chat is random one-on-one chat filtered by language. You select Japanese before you start, and the matcher prefers to pair you with other people who selected Japanese — so both sides are actually looking for the same language.
How the language filter works
The start screen has a language selector. Set it to Japanese and press Start. While both you and your partner are fresh in the queue, the matcher keeps the language requirement strict; if the Japanese queue is thin, it gently relaxes after a short wait so you still get connected instead of staring at a spinner. That means most matches will be Japanese speakers — not a guarantee against the occasional relaxed match.
Text or video
Japanese chat works in both modes. Prefer typing? Keep it keyboard-only in text chat. Want to hear the language? Turn your camera on for video. The language filter applies to both.
Why people use it
Language-filtered chat is the closest thing to a free language exchange: you can practice a language with a native speaker, or simply find people who think in the same words as you. Japan's evening hours line up with the timezone sweet spot for many regions, so the queue stays healthy across the day.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the chat really in Japanese?
You will be matched with people who selected Japanese in their language filter, so the conversation happens in Japanese when both sides are fresh in the queue. If the queue is thin, matching relaxes after a short wait and a non-Japanese match becomes possible.
- Do I need to speak Japanese to use it?
No. You can chat with Japanese speakers to practice, or switch the language filter to Global if you prefer to match with anyone.
- Is Japanese chat free?
Yes. Chatting is free with no daily limit, exactly like every other mode.
